- New funding effort will deploy a corps of scientist ‘scouts’ to spot innovative ideas It seems probable to me that a partial cause of the slowdown in innovation is the relatively homogeneous ways in which we pick ideas to fund (mostly through peer review). Experimentation with other routes of identifying good ideas is welcome.

- Working notes on the role of vision papers in basic science I find vision papers mostly unvisionary, and I suspect that a lot of “obviously” visionary papers are only obviously so in retrospect. That said, this post makes a good case for the importance of vision papers.
